Buffer strip

If there is a stream or municipal drainage ditch running near the field, there is potential for the soil and fertilizer to get in the water, and cause problems downstream.  Leaving a few meters of grass on each side as a buffer strip can filter out the soil, protect the banks from erosion and minimize the risk of getting fertilizers into the water.
